What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilias Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is the art of bringing your opponent in such a position that he or she has to give up by (verbal) tapping in order to not lose consciousness or not letting a limb break. BJJ emphasizes on bringing the fight to the ground and fighting from there. This martial arts is developed by the Gracie family since 1917 and has it roots in judo and traditional jiu jitsu. In 1993, it was the first time BJJ got famous on a worldwide level, thanks to Royce Gracie and the first event of the UFC. This event was set up in order to find out which martial arts was the most effective. Eight different competitors were selected with different martial arts backgrounds (boxing, kickboxing, karate, sumo wrestling, wrestling) in order to fight in the octagon without any rules. The lighests and weakests competitor, Royce, was able to defeat all of his heavier and stronger opponents by using his BJJ. After this event, BJJ was being recognized and Mixed Martial Arts was born.
Now, years later, MMA and BJJ are one of the fast growing sports and is recognized trough the world. The UFC is still the most prestigious MMA organization. BJJ is being practiced all over the world and there is a gigantic competition scene. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is still famous for being the most effective martial arts where the smaller are able to beat the bigger.
